1. Measure the space the material will fill
Measure the inside length and width of a rectangular bed. For a round bed, measure its inside diameter. Use a consistent unit; do not mix an 8-foot length with a 48-inch width without converting.
Next, measure only the intended material layer. A frame’s overall height is not necessarily the soil depth: an existing layer, false bottom or unfilled space can reduce it.
2. Separate a full fill from a top-up
For an empty bed, use the depth you intend to fill. For a top-up, subtract the existing depth from the target total depth. In our calculator, a target of 12 inches with 8 inches already present means adding 4 inches.
Use these measurements to calculate raised-bed soil, mulch or compost, then save each area to your project.
3. Read the volume on the bag
Use the package’s net volume, such as 1.5 cubic feet or 40 liters. Bag weight is not interchangeable with volume. Moisture, material and compaction affect density, so we do not make a universal pounds-per-yard conversion.
4. Compare the full purchase
Round bags up to whole packages. For bulk material, ask about minimum loads, ordering increments, delivery and taxes. Enter your actual quotes in the bag-versus-bulk calculator. Comparing a cubic-yard rate alone can hide delivery costs.
5. Confirm the material, not just the quantity
Our tools calculate volume. They do not select a soil blend, diagnose soil conditions or prescribe a mulch or compost depth. Check the product label and use appropriate local gardening guidance.
For advice about soil testing and amendments, consult University of Minnesota Extension’s soil-testing guidance. Local conditions and a soil test provide information a geometry calculator cannot.
Before you order
- Recheck inside dimensions and the material-filled depth.
- Check whether your supplier needs an allowance for its specific product.
- Check that grouped project items use the same product before pooling an order.
- Confirm delivery access, fees and where loose material can be placed.
- Print your shopping list and keep a copy of the quote.
